Malmo CNN —The Eurovision Song Contest was thrown into fresh turmoil Saturday when organizers disqualified the Dutch entrant hours before the grand final for a backstage incident involving a female crew member. “Swedish police have investigated a complaint made by a female member of the production crew after an incident following his performance in Thursday night’s Semi Final. While the legal process takes its course, it would not be appropriate for him to continue in the Contest,” the EBU said. The EBU said the disqualification of Klein did not involve any other performer or member another country’s delegation. Tensions brew in Malmo ahead of finalThe alleged incident involving Klein happened on Thursday evening after the second semi-final, the EBU said.

New York CNN —The New York Times is facing questions about a sweeping investigative story it published on the Israel-Hamas war back in December. But key elements of The Times’ reporting in telling that larger story have since fallen under the microscope. “We weren’t aware of the rape initially; we were informed only when The New York Times’ journalist approached us,” her mother told the Israeli outlet YNet. we don’t know exactly what happened.”“It was only following the New York Times investigation that we learned from the journalists that my sister had been raped,” Abdush’s brother added to YNet. In this case, there is a large volume of evidence to indicate that Hamas carried out sexual assaults during the October 7 attack.

Calvin Klein has always trafficked in high and low — in classic all-American athleticism, shot through with an untethered primal lust. Some other Calvin Klein ads fail to have the same friction, the right wrongness. There are faintly fascistic undertones in the form Calvin Klein valorizes. (How surprising is it that Calvin Klein has worked with the estate of the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who used his models to engage the viewer sexually?) ?” — as though a touch of discomfort isn’t precisely what creates a hit Calvin Klein ad.

Why Calvin Klein ads still get people talking
  + stars: | 2024-01-18 | by ( Joan Kennedy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
The strategy was classic Calvin Klein, a brand which has been synonymous with sexy, conversation-starting campaigns since the 1970s. From Calvin KleinBut the White ads were just the start of the headlines for Calvin Klein. Adorning a New York City phonebooth, Mark Wahlberg is seen in a 1992 Calvin Klein campaign. Meanwhile, no one besides the ASA seems to be admonishing Calvin Klein over the FKA Twigs ads. For Calvin Klein, both sets of ads are an example of that old adage — there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

Sensual Calvin Klein Ad Banned by Regulators in the U.K.

Jeremy Allen White ’s naked torso is hard to miss in the U.S. right now courtesy of Calvin Klein’s latest ad campaign, which features the star of the chef drama “The Bear” in his underwear and not much else. But the brand’s proclivity for bare-all advertising has landed it in hot water across the pond. The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority on Wednesday said it had upheld two complaints that a 2023 ad featuring FKA Twigs had irresponsibly objectified the singer. The regulator also deemed that the ad was overtly sexual and not suitable to be displayed as a poster that could be seen by children and anyone it might offend.

The Bergdorf Blonde Moves to Park Avenue

Parvin Klein, the veteran colorist who perfected an iconic shade of blonde, has painted her last highlight at the Bergdorf Goodman department store salon. But the future of Ms. Klein has a happy ending, moving operations to Julien Farel’s salon at the Regency, a few blocks away from Bergdorf. Ms. Klein, who moved to New York at age 34 in the wake of the Iranian Revolution, had no experience when she enrolled in cosmetology school. Though the name of the salon changed over the years, Ms. Klein, and her eye for color, remained a constant. CNN —A former appointee of Donald Trump was sentenced Friday to 70 months in prison for his violent role on January 6, 2021. Federico Klein, a former State Department appointee, was found guilty following a bench trial before Judge Trevor McFadden this summer of multiple counts, including assaulting multiple police officers that day. “Your actions on January 6 were shocking and egregious,” McFadden, also a Trump appointee, said during Friday’s sentencing. Aquilino Gonell told the court that Klein had attacked him multiple times with a police riot shield. Klein’s actions on January 6, Woodward said, were “not a betrayal” of his service in the military and the State Department, but was part of attending “a protest turned wrong.”

Klein, who didn't testify at his trial, declined to address the court before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden sentenced him to five years and 10 months in prison. Prosecutors said Klein’s participation in the riot was likely motivated by a desire to keep his job as a presidential appointee. Prosecutors had recommended a 10-year prison sentence for Klein, an Alexandria, Virginia, resident who was 42 years old at the time of the riot. Klein and Cappuccio separately attended Trump's “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 before marching to the Capitol. Approximately 700 of them have been sentenced, with roughly two-thirds receiving terms of imprisonment ranging from three days to 22 years.

Opinion | Trump’s Lawyers Are Going Down. Is He?

On Tuesday morning, Jenna Ellis became the third Donald Trump-allied lawyer to plead guilty in Fulton County, Ga., to state criminal charges related to Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The Ellis, Powell and Chesebro guilty pleas represent an advance for both the state election prosecution in Georgia and the federal election prosecution in Washington. At the same time, however, it’s far too soon to tell whether the prosecution has made real progress on Trump himself. The ultimate importance of the plea deals depends on the nature of the testimony from the lawyers, and we don’t yet know what they have said — or will say. To understand the potential significance of these plea agreements, it’s necessary to understand the importance of Trump’s legal team to Trump’s criminal defense.

I’ve been raving about Naomi Klein’s “Doppelganger” since I read an advance copy this summer, and when I tell people about it, some of them are baffled: You mean Klein wrote a whole book about being confused with the writer Naomi Wolf? Only in a superficial sense is “Doppelganger” really about Wolf, the liberal feminist icon turned anti-vax Steve Bannon sidekick. Klein and Wolf, both brown-haired middle-aged Jewish women writers, are often mistaken for each other. That became a growing problem for Klein as her reputation was tainted by Wolf’s escalating lunacy. Trapped at home by the pandemic, Klein became increasingly obsessed by Wolf’s transformation into a heroine of Covid truthers.

Klein was trapped inside a hall of mirrors, and she was trying to find a way out. Before writing about her doppelgänger, Klein felt stuck. Klein told her what she was going through: “I used to fill notebooks, you know, everywhere I went. As much as Klein recoiled at what Wolf was saying, she also felt the sting of recognition. (In an email, Wolf declined to comment on “Doppelganger,” explaining that she hadn’t yet read the book, but said that some of her tweets “were poorly worded and were deleted.”)

A video from a 2019 Greta Thunberg interview shows the Swedish climate activist saying that bank bailouts are evidence that the world has enough money to address climate change. A clip shared out of context from this interview showing Thunberg saying, “if we can save the banks, then we can save the world,” has circulated online with the suggestion that her priorities had shifted from the planet to saving banks. “The only way to save the planet is to save the banks,” reads a Facebook post (here). “The money is there, if we can save the banks, then we can save the world… I mean, if there is something we are not lacking in this world, it’s money,” Thunberg said. BoE’s inflation firefighting will outlast peers

The Bank of England on Thursday raised UK interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point to a 15-year peak of 5.25%. Governor Andrew Bailey and his colleagues also vowed monetary policy would remain “sufficiently restrictive for sufficiently long” to bring inflation down to the BoE’s 2% target. As for the BoE, traders are betting that rates will hit 5.5% in September and stay elevated for the whole of next year. Despite an early start, Bailey’s fight against stubborn inflation is likely to drag on for longer. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/NEW YORK, Aug 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Robinhood Markets (HOOD.O) is looking more grown-up - and more boring. The problem: Users are still fleeing, and nearly half of revenue comes from interest that is destined to fade. Robinhood warned last quarter that a 100 basis-point drop in interest rates would lead to a hit equivalent to an 11% fall in revenue. When the Federal Reserve eventually turns to cutting rates, Robinhood will need more users to fill that hole.

Adidas and AB InBev influencer hangover may return

LONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Adidas (ADSGn.DE) and Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI.BR) are showing some unexpected resilience in the face of influencer trouble. Belgium beer producer AB InBev, meanwhile, grappled with a different influencer headache. The world's largest brewer experienced an April consumer boycott after picking transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney to promote its popular Bud Light brew. And while AB InBev say 80% of its consumers still look favourably or are neutral on Bud Light, the brand was dethroned as the top selling U.S. beer in May. Still, Adidas trades at 10 times its forecast 2025 EBITDA, below its peer Nike's (NKE.N) 16 times, and AB InBev trails Heineken (HEIN.AS) by an even larger margin.

Klein's UK SPAC deal is more swan song than encore

The northern English county is the home of serial acquirer CorpAcq, led by the brother of “Take That” singer Jason Orange, which Klein’s Churchill Capital Corp VII (CVII.N) special-purpose acquisition company vehicle now hopes to buy. The deal, which values the investor in plumbing to fork-lift leasing groups at $1.6 billion including debt, may struggle to relight the fire of the depressed SPAC sector. Klein’s planned deal comes amid a growing lack of patience by SPAC investors. CorpAcq could yet be magic for SPAC investors. Churchill’s sponsors, including Klein, will waive most of their founder shares, which typically vest when a deal is done.

How Strong Is the Economy?
  + stars: | 2023-04-24 | by ( David Leonhardt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
Conservatives sometimes respond to this data by trying to separate the economy from the rest of society. But I think it’s a mistake to imagine that the economy is somehow distinct from living standards. To over-generalize only somewhat, blue America believes in NIMBYism (“not in my backyard”), while red America is more comfortable with YIMBYism. That combination helps explain why our economy looks so good by some measures and so bad by others. Liberals have been hobbling government and the economy, Nicholas Bagley of the University of Michigan explained on Ezra Klein’s podcast.
SUMMERY PALACE Interior designer Kevin Klein’s light-filled take on monarchical style, in his Los Angeles home. A CENTURIES-OLD French château dazzles the eye. But is it a tempting place to unwind, chomp a BLT and stream “Top Gun: Maverick”? For the décor of his own 1927 French Normandy-style home in Los Angeles, local designer Kevin Klein took inspiration from the Château de Digoine, in Burgundy, but he knew he needed a friendlier take on castle aesthetics. “I figured if I could replicate just 1% of Digoine in a contemporary way, I’d be happy.”
Veteran dealmaker Michael Klein has stepped down from the Credit Suisse board to become CEO. Third-party capital would help fund the unit's lending as a standalone entity, Credit Suisse said, without providing additional details. At the same time, Credit Suisse would pull back from certain businesses, such as providing revolving credit lines to companies and non-essential trading. Bloomberg News reported last month that Credit Suisse was nearing a deal to buy the boutique for a few hundred million dollars. Longer term under its plan for CSFB, Credit Suisse projects net revenues could rise to as much as $3.5 billion.
Valuing Michael Klein is a fascinating sideshow
  + stars: | 2023-01-13 | by ( Liam Proud | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
The two sides have discussed a deal where Credit Suisse would acquire M. Klein & Company with Klein getting a stake in First Boston. Putting a price on M. Klein & Co is hard from the outside because its accounts aren’t publicly available. The size of that holding depends therefore on the relative worth of First Boston and M. Klein & Co. A 9% stake would then be worth $320 million, implying a huge payday for M. Klein & Co shareholders. If Klein makes money, Credit Suisse shareholders would do very well too.
NEW YORK/ LONDON, Nov 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - First Boston is an old Wall Street name that’s re-emerging from Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) with some new features. Credit Suisse Chief Executive Ulrich Körner is reshaping the $11 billion group to put some bad years and big losses firmly in the past. Credit Suisse is setting up joint ventures between CS First Boston and the parent’s trading and wealth management businesses, according to a person familiar with the matter. An added complication is that CS First Boston bankers could be getting paid in their own division’s stock, rather than Credit Suisse shares. Michael Klein will step down from the Credit Suisse board of directors to help launch CS First Boston, the bank said.
Michael Klein’s fourth act may be his toughest

Yet his toughest task yet will be making a success of Credit Suisse’s (CSGN.S) carved-out advisory unit, CS First Boston. Credit Suisse will be reluctant to provide that, having already slashed exposures to $3.6 billion from $10.2 billion in early 2021. Credit Suisse has struggled for years to encourage the two divisions to team up on deals involving billionaire business owners. Klein’s fourth investment banking act will be his toughest. Klein, a former Citigroup banker who has been on the Credit Suisse board since 2018, will act as an adviser to Chief Executive Ulrich Körner.
